STOP 011 RETURN TO RECORD PARADISE
Alongside Trade Mark of Quality and TAKRL, Wizardo Records releases from this period are highly collectible. Jon—aka “Wiz”—and his high-school friend began by wholesaling other people’s bootlegs before purchasing two discarded European stampers containing an unidentified Pink Floyd concert. They split the two-record set into separate LPs to maximize profit, launching the Wizardo label. Much of the information on those first inserts—including the venue and year—was wrong, establishing the loosey-goosey approach that became part of Wizardo’s charm. Like most bootleggers, they copied from other labels, but their records had an unmistakable personality. The Beatles were their favorite subject, though their catalog eventually became even more diverse than TAKRL’s.
In my last Return to Record Paradise post, I mentioned coming home from boarding school for Christmas break and visiting the store with my mom. The sweet lady behind the counter gave me a couple of free bootlegs that night—and this was one of them! It’s one of the earliest vinyl releases of the now-legendary Brussels/Wembley material recorded for King Biscuit Flower Hour. Although Nasty Music and Bedspring Symphony had already used some of this material, Wizardo offered a different selection and running order drawn from two shows. Side four ends with some wonderfully strange filler—classic Wizardo—making this double LP a truly one-of-a-kind release.
