STOP 016 B-MOVIE BACKLOT
It is of my sincere opinion that any review, be it one paragraph or one book, should begin with something along the lines of "they just don't make 'em like that no more." That's a cliche of course but with this film, really, they don't. An unabashed, brutally honest, warts n all look at an out-of-control country star on the road. Driven, no pun intended, by the charismatic can't-take-your-eyes-off-him performance by the late, great Rip Torn.
How good is this Rip Torn performance? Let me put it this way - as many diverse and sometimes iconic roles the man did in his lifetime - if you took them all and added them up, it wouldn't match or even come close. Serious. They should have just given him an Oscar.
For those that are curious and want to do the research, it's also one of those films that has a lot of backstory and characters for practically each person above and below the line. Some great pedigree here; a legendary film that got scuffled into obscurity. 4.0 stars/5
Teaser - this next post is about the very first bootleg I bought when walking in the store at age 11. It's a classic!
